Welcome to our site about the wild animals in Orange County.
In particular coyotes.
I am hoping this will provide some awareness, ways to be safe, and mostly a place for us to be heard, and a way of people setting up meetings in their local areas.
Coyotes are breeding and there are really are no natural predators to control the population.
Natural predators of the coyote are include alligators, wolves, mountain lions or cougars, and not too many of those are roaming around the streets of Orange County, CA.
Coyotes can have a litter up to 19 pups. According to statistics, the average to mature are 6.
Purpose of this site:
What I would like…. Dogs are safe in their own backyard, they can run on the grass and not have to worry a coyote might jump the wall and kill him in an instant.
What I would like…. Children can walk the dog up and down the street without worrying a coyote is going to try to rip the dog from them and hurt or kill them both. That anyone can safely walk a dog.
What I would like… Toddlers, young children, can play safely in the backyard or playground without worrying that a coyote is going to attack them.
What I would like… is for those that are not aware, and bring home a new pet, have a new baby, or move to this area and go for a walk, that they are aware. So they are not caught off-guard thinking they are in an urban area and that know they live where coyotes roam the streets or hop over a 6ft fence like it isn’t there. So they are safe.
I think that many of us here in Orange County, CA would like to have that feeling of safety in their own homes.
In order to support this site, we will need some people to volunteer to represent your area and keep the posts coming, approve them and support it.
Email me if you would like to be this person in your local area. In the meantime I will try to do my best to keep up on the locations.

I’m from the Midwest and then spent some time in Spokane Washington. Both of these places have a coyote season that trappers can make a bounty from presentation of a leg or tail from a dead coyote. Other states have population controls in place. What the heck’s wrong with these PITA type Californian’s that they can’t see that this is an epidemic that needs to be resolved?? Seriously? The coyote population is out of control. These animals are killing our pets and maiming our children. They either need to be killed or trapped and moved to another state where they can be. We euthanize how many dogs and cats a year, but capturing and euthanizing an animal that is a threat to our public safety is out of the question? That’s messed up. I just saw one outside my townhome in Costa Mesa and am freaking out a bit because I know that they will lure your pet into following them so that the pack can surround and kill them. DO NOT RELEASE YOUR PET TO CHASE A COYOTE !! They are a smart adversary. Am NOT liking not being able to walk my dog at night. 🙁
Yes, I understand the need to feel safe, but I also understand that the coyote problem is really an outcome of human development that has encroached on animal habitat as well as created the climate change conditions of drought that has impacted wild animal food supplies. We need to look past ourselves and understand our place in the ecosystem before we get hysterical. It seems to me that we simply need to do what the ranchers in my home state of Oregon do- put dry dog food out near the coyotes habitat which is naturally outside of human habitat. For instance, I know of sheep ranchers in Central Oregon who place bags of dry dog food out near the canyons where the coyotes live so that the coyotes have no need to kill the lambs in the pasture for food. And guess what? The coyotes leave the lambs alone because they don’t need to kill them for food. The solution to the problem is not fear and killing
I totally agree. I feel like we live in a jungle . If I wanted that I go live there but I live here to be safe of wild animals. I can’t believe Orange County has let this get out of control. I have to walk around neighborhood with mace and blow horn and a stick ready to defend myself and my dog. Maybe we need to vote better. Vote for someone to take time to keep us safe. Obviously right now they don’t care.
I live in Lake forest, orange county calif in a mobile home retirement community.
We often have coyote sightings. In the last four days 4sightings that I know of. What can be done. Many have small dogs they walk and are very nervous.
Hello,
I recently saved a neighbors dog from a coyote in San Juan Capistrano.
It was the middle of the night and I was awoken by the noise of the commotion between dog & coyote.
I ran outside just as the coyote left the yard, dog in mouth.
I proceeded to chase the coyote for a few blocks until he/she dropped the dog and ran off.
Upon approaching the dog, which I believed to be dead, I checked its throat for a pulse – the dog, surely under the primal impression that I was a predator, nipped me in the finger. It drew blood, though very little.
The dog in question had its shots up to date, but there is a slim possibility that the coyotes saliva came in contact with my small finger wound.
When I got back in my house, I washed my hand thoroughly with hydrogen peroxide etc…
This all took place about 8-10 days ago.
Now that you have the backstory, my question is this – what is the current status of rabies in Southern California coyotes? Is this something I should be spending time worrying over? Or this paranoia? – which I have, in the past, been susceptible to.
I would appreciate a response very much.
Best,
M.
Forgot to say sighting was in Huntington Beach.
Question to Admin. Are there any formatted Flyers I can print from my computer?
Yes, there are. I also emailed you.

If you would like me to alter the message or provide another type of flyer, just let me know. Thanks!
Coyote sighted trotting down alley between California And Huntington Streets, near Manning Park at 630 am today. Ignored me as I opened garage door.
I would just like to weigh in on any comments about how serious the coyote problem has been, and would support any effort to influence local officials that now is the time to start thining out the the coyote population. We lost a cat to a coyote on labor day 2011. From all of the articles, the problem is getting worse. I feel like I’m constatntly on edge about leaving doors open or letting out pets, even briefly. We need to be able to feel safe in our own neighborhoods.
Here are the facts for this past month

A few comments have come in today, they all mention seeing coyotes in packs.
There are many ways you can be involved. One would just be letting your neighbors know they exist, that is the easiest, just handing out a card or flyer to them to this website so they can see the facts. Next you can help or start a group in one of the cities, http://www.coyotesinorangecounty.com/2012/10/07/teams/
