Yesterday, with the help of the City of Los Alamitos, Mayor Pro Tem Troy Edgar and City Manager Jeff Stewart, RPMT was able to accomplish a goal held since our inception back in May – we finally got the property behind Martha Ann cleared!
On April 25, 2011, RPMT met with Los Alamitos Mayor Pro Tem Troy Edgar and City Manager Jeffrey Stewart. The purpose of the meeting was to discuss joining efforts in protecting children and pets from coyotes in our adjoining communities.
RPMT raised the issue that the property behind Martha Ann, which is owned by CalTrans and in the city boundaries of Los Alamitos, was a fire hazard and posed possible danger to all Rossmoor Residents. This area has plagued Rossmoor Residents by providing a habitat for coyote dens, hunting, birthing, and howling late at night, leaving Martha Ann Residents in fear for their families.

City Manager Jeffrey Stewart stated CalTrans was responsible for the maintenance of the property behind Martha Ann, adjacent to the I-605 Freeway. He provided maps indicating boundary lines and stating both Mayor Pro Tem Edgar and he would immediately pursue this safety issue on behalf of Rossmoor Residents.

Caltrans’s Principal Assistant Bill Gilchrist met with RPMT and Los Alamitos Officials on two separate occasions and stated CalTrans was willing to remove the ground cover and dead trees. This was done to prepare for the installation of the 18 foot sound wall and landscaping in addition to the public safety issue (fire hazard).

RPMT Founders David & Rebecca Lara would personally like to thank Mayor Pro Tem Troy Edgar, City Manager Jeff Stewart, Caltrans’s Bill Gilchrist and RHA’s Tom Fitzgerald for their involvement in keeping Rossmoor safe for kids and pets. We look forward to our future joint efforts with the City of Los Alamitos.

Welcome!

September 12, 2011 by Coyotes In Orange County Leave a Comment

Welcome to our site about the wild animals in Orange County.

In particular coyotes.   There are also issues with mountain lions and bobcats.

I am hoping this will provide some awareness,  ways to be safe,  and mostly a place for us to be heard, and a way of people setting up meetings in their local areas.

Coyotes are breeding and there are really are no natural predators to control the population.

Predators include alligators, wolves, mountain lions or cougars, and not too many of those are roaming around the streets of Orange County, CA.

I would like provide a place for you to map attacks and sightings.

I would like to put an area by location where can blog and post your opinions and plan meeting and how to help your local area.

Also,  being a person who has lost a pet just recently,  I will put a place for you to post a picture of your pet or family member and when, where and what happened.   I know how it feels to lose that family member (mine being a pet), and I hope this helps in the grief process to post them on here.

I will also be putting a place to share images of coyotes running around your neighborhood.  Or videos.   I mention coyotes a lot, but this also includes mountain lions, bobcats or any other wild animal that is not coming into Orange County.

Now,  before a bunch of nasty posting begins, please, lets refrain from that.  This is a place to openly discuss the subject and come up with a solution.

Certain animals can definitely be relocated.   But in the case of Coyotes for instance, there are so many that are not afraid of humans anymore that this cannot happen.   There are just so many now.

There are some interesting products to help protect your home.   This is a sharing place for that as well.

What I would like….  is to know I can let my puppy out in my own back yard so he can run on the grass and not have to watch him knowing a coyote might jump the wall and kill him in an instant.

What I would like…. is to know that my child can walk the dog up and down the street without worrying a coyote is going to try to rip the dog from my son and hurt or kill them both.

What I would like…is to know my toddler baby can play safely on my patio without worrying that a coyote is going to jump in the yard and attack her.

What I would like… is for those that are not aware, and bring home a new pet, have a new baby, or move to this area and go for a walk, that they are aware.   So they are not caught off-guard thinking they are in an urban area  and know they live where coyotes roam the streets or hop over a 6ft fence like it isn’t there.  So they are safe.

This is why I have put this site together.

I think that many of here in Orange County, CA would like to have that feeling of safety in their own homes.

Please be patient as I complete building this site.

In order to maintain this site, we will need some people to volunteer to represent your area and keep the posts coming, approve them and maintain it.   Email me if you would like to be this person.   In the meantime I will try to do my best to keep up on the locations.
