Thank you for creating this website and your concern about the over population of coyotes. I live in Huntington Beach and the coyotes are out of control. My three cats and small dog are indoor animals now, but I have had a cat attacked and eaten by a coyote. This past month, my neighbors and I have seen large, healthy coyotes on our streets. And, in the last week, two cats were eaten. Sadly, a trail of their body parts were found at the end of my street. I don’t know if I can take it. At night, I’m always counting my pets, if I can’t find one, I go into panic mode that somehow they escaped. I lost my beloved Nikita, finding her parts and fur on the other side of my backyard wall. I don’t know if I will ever forgive myself for not protecting her better.

Your welcome! I am sorry to hear you have lost a pet to coyotes. I understand what you are saying, and I think most pet owners, particulary cat owners feel this way. Especially if they have cats that were used to going outside as they never seem to forget that and keep trying to go outside. Its a worry, and its constant. I have a dog and if I forget a door open into the yard I worry to what I may come home to find. I cannot leave doors open for potty breaks, we cannot have a doggy door, and so even with a dog there is that worry. You cannot let guilt consume you. I had a cat that was 18 years old. She sat in my yard while I gardened and would lay in the sun and she always slept inside. For years there were no issues. All of sudden this became a huge issue and I was not aware it had become so. I lost her due to a coyote. I actually lost two cats, the male that charged out to protect her and she died shortly after, withering away, of a broken heart and stress of watching her lifelong friend killed in front of her. I too felt guilt, but I had not known. But, I know that I would have made the end of her life miserable if I would of taken away her backyard time at the end of her life. She was old, she was not going anyways, just my backyard and on our driveway from our garage. She did not hop fences. So, I know she lived a happy life, she was able to go outside smell the air, the grass, and lay in the sun, something she was accustomed to. I struggle with caging a cat in my home and I too would worry all the time, so I have yet to get another cat since. So, I understand, and I think many people and relate to what you feel. You will have to watch out for your pets now and unfortunately worry about them as long as there are coyotes living around us.
